APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Rising horror star Stephen Graham Jones delivers an intense story that’s also a playful nod to ’80s slasher films, and especially their sequels. Four years after the Lake Witch murders, former “final girl” Jade Daniels returns home to Proofrock, a town still coming to terms with the tragic and bloody events that Jade barely survived. And then the murders start again. Jones amps up the violence in this brilliant follow-up to My Heart Is a Chainsaw. But Don’t Fear the Reaper is more than just a gorefest—Jones cleverly uses the tropes of slasher movie sequels to tackle serious issues like grief and trauma. As the body count rises, he heightens the tension, making us anxious to see which of the colorful citizens of Proofrock will survive. This chilling book will definitely keep you up at night.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Jade Daniels and her encyclopedic knowledge of slasher films return for another blood-soaked romp in Jones's superb sequel to My Heart Is a Chainsaw. It's been four years since Jade—now going by Jennifer—survived the Independence Day Massacre that devastated her hometown of Proofrock, Idaho. Jennifer is trying to put her traumatic past behind her when Dark Mill South, a legendary hook-handed serial killer, escapes captivity on the outskirts of Proofrock during a once-in-a-century winter storm. When gruesomely gutted bodies pile up around town, Jennifer's reflexes and genre savvy kick in and she must once again rally her friends and the local authorities, while using her familiarity with cinematic slaughter to save them all from victimhood. The only problem, as she deduces from the killer's unstoppable onslaught, is that "he knows all the same movies we do." Jones expertly blends snappy graveyard humor with nail-biting suspense, and he gives his characters distinctive personalities that distinguish them from the underdeveloped body fodder common to most slasher scenarios. This characteristically clever gore-fest proves Jennifer to be a horror heroine worthy of many more adventures.
Customer Reviews
The sequel is better than the original
The best horror films always have a sequel. Sometimes that sequel is better than the original . Other times that sequel is worse. Stephen Graham Jones’ Don’t Fear The Reaper can be described as the latter not the former. A tale that takes place exactly five years after the first book. Main character Jennifer “Jade” Daniels who when we last saw her was the final girl. The one who managed to take down Stacy Graves during that horrible massacre on Fourth of July. We learn that Jade was convicted of the murders and no one believed her story. Sounds pretty realistic to me. She returns home to Proofrock at the age of 21. She’s fresh out of jail and on probation. A new killer steps foot in town after surviving an accident during his FBI transport that occurs outside of Proofrock. Bodies start piling up and just when Jade thought that she could start a new and settle back into town. Did I mention there’s a winter storm? Yeah, that’s happening.
My second favorite character from the first book has survived. Her life is different than it was before.
Jade has grown and progressed so much as a character. The reintroduction of a handful of characters from the first book was pretty cool. The third person narration in this story was pretty good because of the fluctuations between a few main characters. The one thing that I did not like was the length of some of the chapters but as you can see I finished it.
The third and final book in the Indian lake series is coming soon. If you need me I’ll be waiting patiently for it.
