Darcy in Disguise: A Pride & Prejudice Variation

Lizzy Bennet must marry soon: she is running out of excuses as to why she will not wed one of the perfectly acceptable young men her mother has suggested. After all, given her family's circumstances she cannot afford to hold out for a love match—and she is beginning to doubt that such a thing even exists outside of fairytales.

Fitzwilliam Darcy does not have a deceitful bone in his body—but he has an abundance of pride. Why else would he have willingly disguised himself as a servant and sworn a vow of secrecy in order to prove a friend wrong? It seemed inconsequential in theory. After all, he does not know a soul in this part of Hertfordshire and it is only for a month—what possible consequences can it have?

His attitude changes when he meets a young lady who captures his heart like no-one else has. Darcy finds himself trapped by his own disguise, for what gentlewoman would look past his ragged clothes and lowly station?
