Descripción editorial

This volume from authors in three anglophone traditions: British, American and Australian, explores new terrain that connects sartorial traditions, both ancient and modern, with the realities of conquest and war. These contributors offer diverse perspectives drawn from the fields of fashion, media and film studies, cultural criticism, art history and practices in textile art. While one author considers the role of Britainís Young Black Artists in her analysis of recent curatorial trends in London museums, another contributor offers a personal view of soldiering from his completed tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq. The provocative issues of war, postcolonial conquest and the uneasy presence of the military in civilian life include: representations of female bravery in wartime comics from the First and Second World Wars, body changes that build a new ëbrandí of modern soldier, military style in uniformed civilian occupations, styles of dress as a uniform for youth violent crime, ethics of high fashion in the promotion of ëmilitary chicí.
