Caroline had reached a breaking point when she fled from her husband, Peter, whose alcoholism made life unbearable. She made the desperate choice to leave him in order to protect both herself and their young daughter.
For three years, they found safety and peace—until Nick Holt, Peter's cousin, appeared at her door. He brought the news that Peter had died and insisted that Caroline and her daughter return home with him to live with Peter's mother.
