Inspiration for the book’s title comes from the Buddhist maxim, “If you meet the Buddha on the road kill him.” Griffin argues that the typical Sunday School picture of Jesus actually doesn’t fit the Bible. Christians need a new way of understanding Jesus’s significance. Why? First, the Bible presents not just one solitary face of Jesus, but many faces. So finding the one, true historical Jesus is impossible. Second, the Bible’s supernatural references to Jesus’s life—and all other biblical events for that matter—should not be taken literally. So, instead of looking for a literal, cosmic Christ one should look instead for the spirit of Jesus that lingers in the diverse images of the New Testament. Griffin makes his case by first tracing the contours of biblical critical scholarship, then showing how one can reinterpret biblical texts in a way that takes them seriously and in the process reforms Christian spirituality.

The book is colorfully illustrated with original artwork by Gentleman’s Game (http://www.gentlemans-game.com), picturing the book’s progression from a simple yet staid picture of Jesus to a vibrant tapestry.
