Paul is often considered to be the most important person after Jesus in the history of Christianity. His epistles (letters) have had an enormous influence on Christian theology, especially on the relationship between God the Father and Jesus, and on the mystical human relationship with the divine.

The book looks at some of the historical threads running just under the surface of the New Testament; Herod's Idumean origins, the Roman system of arrest and prosecution, how temples generated revenues for their communities, the Noahide Covenant, etc. and consider how an understanding of these issues expands the meaning of different texts. A theme throughout is that the New Testament is by and about different people. Separating the different voices helps see the unique contribution Paul made to the emerging faith.
