The Two Natures

Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

2 Peter 1:4

This Scripture calls us to participate in the divine nature through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, and in so doing we are enabled by God’s grace to escape the corruption in the world. However, we are the only ones who can choose in agreement with the Holy Spirit to be sanctified; no one else can choose for us. We are the only ones who can choose which direction our lives will take – the way of the divine nature or the way of the carnal sinful nature. 

If we choose to continue in the way of the carnal sinful nature, we are also free to do so, even after we have received the Lord Jesus.
