Confined within the impregnable cold walls of Colditz Castle during the Second World War, two Canadian army officers passed a logbook from a Red Cross parcel among the officers and men of Oflag IV-C so they could write their own stories to be published after the war. Although much of the logbook was typed and printed in 1946, the original writings were concealed in a bedroom drawer for nearly seventy years before finally seeing the light of day and are now printed in their original historical form. These stories each meticulously written in pencil by officers whose exploits have since been immortalised in books, film and television can be seen here as they were written inside Colditz Castle. These fascinating pages bring to life many episodes of courageous prison camp escapes, air, land and sea battles, bombing raids, incarceration, deprivation and even amusing wartime experiences. There are poems, drawings and the vivid experiences that now can be seen just as they were recounted on paper in the dark days of the war. This format brings the reader closer than ever to the actual experiences of those gallant officers and men, whose heroic actions and persistent escape attempts gave them fame.
