Jackson Brodie has been summoned by two siblings to the home of a deceased romantic novelist to investigate a missing painting - also the mother's carer, who conveniently went missing at the same time.

Lady Milton is living in very reduced circumstances at Burton Makepeace House. Her son has very modern ideas making money, few of which appeal to her. And now their prize painting by Turner has gone missing. Indeed so has her helper, Sophie - the only person she felt she could really talk to. Th person called to investigate this case is DC Reggie Chase.

As Jackson begins to investigate other thefts in the area, his research leads him to Lady Milton, Burton Makepeace & a reunion with Reggie. With a vicar who has lost his faith, a returned soldier trying to reinvent his life, an escaped prisoner on the loose, a huddle of doting spinsters AND a dead Nanny, the stage is set for a country house showdown like no other.
