Sir Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was a popular writer during England’s Victorian Era, and he often wrote novels with common Victorian themes of dashing adventure, daring characters, and exotic romances. Haggard was also a forebearer of the Lost World genre. Some of his novels, like King Solomon’s Mines, are still popular and influential today.

Haggard wrote Cleopatra in the late 19th century, telling the story from the viewpoint of an Ancient Egyptian priest who is given the responsibility of overthrowing the supposed impostor Cleopatra, drive out the Romans, and restore Egypt to its golden era. Haggard, who often employed hints of adventure and exoticism, portrayed Cleopatra as witty and devious, and she has an overwhelming presence that all can feel. Cleopatra, like the other characters, are both good and evil at the same time, forcing readers to both empathize and despise her.

This edition of Haggard’s Cleopatra is specially formatted with a Table of Contents and is illustrated with over a dozen pictures of Haggard, Caesar, and Cleopatra.
