Colonel Carter's Christmas

F. Hopkinson Smith's warmly nostalgic tales blend Southern grace, gentle humor, and quiet romance into stories of honor, hospitality, and the ties that bind people together. In Colonel Carter's Christmas, the beloved Virginian's old feud with financier P. A. Klutchem resurfaces amid memories of financial hardship, dueling pistols, and the Colonel's stubborn sense of dignity. Yet the heart of the story lies in Carter's generosity: when his friend Fitz faces a desperate market squeeze, the Colonel is ready to sacrifice everything to help, even before he fully understands what is needed. The Romance of an Old-Fashioned Gentleman turns to springtime Maryland, where young Northern artist Adam Gregg arrives at Derwood Manor and is welcomed into the home of Judge Colton and his spirited wife, Olivia. As Adam transforms a dusty garret into a studio and paints Olivia's portrait, work becomes companionship, and companionship deepens into a tender, unspoken bond. Lyrical landscapes, affectionate household scenes, and the promise of love give these stories their enduring charm. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
