Eve Sawyer takes off for a carefree end-of-summer getaway before diving back into another busy fall semester. Seeking relaxation and respite on the heels of solving a recent murder case, she has no plans and no destination in mind.

But when Eve stops at a roadside diner to enjoy a homestyle country meal, she hears about a dead woman found on the road. A local girl named Kaylee, not much younger than Eve.

Eve is just passing through Vain, a tiny Southern flyspeck of a town, and the last thing she expected is to stumble upon a highway hit-and-run investigation and get involved. She feels an urge to stay. Maybe it was fate that brought her here. She can't leave town. Not just yet. Not before finding out how Kaylee died. Was it an accident? Or something else?

Danger lurks as someone is determined to get rid of Eve before she uncovers the truth. As Eve investigates and puts her inherent curiosity and instinctive skills to use, what dark secrets will she unearth?
