Abstract--Misuse of prescription opioids, particularly by adolescents, is a growing problem in the United States. It is a leading cause of death and disability in this age group. The primary form of treatment available to adolescents is drug tree psychosocial programs. For the high risk group that has relapsed after traditional psychosocial treatment, pharmacotherapy needs to be explored. Two primary issues need to be addressed: the development of effective treatment, including the use of opiate antagonists and ongoing monitoring, and education and training of clinicians regarding appropriate prescribing practices in pain management, with better identification of those who misprescribe for personal gain. Keywords--addiction, adolescents, MDFT, pharmacotherapy, prescription drugs, Suboxone[R]
