Abstract This article presents a research-derived theory of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and an applied emotional learning system for developing emotional intelligence skills in clinical and corporate training settings. The Emotional Skills Assessment Process (ESAP) is the positive assessment instrument used to quantify emotional intelligence and provides scale- and factor-specific measurement of emotionally intelligent behavior. The Emotional Learning System (ELS) is a systematic emotional learning model that clinicians and consultants can use to develop emotional intelligence skills. The Emotional Learning System is a visual representation of the structure and process of positive personal change. Skilled clinicians are intuitively aware of this process as they form effective, helping relationships with clients. The ELS provides a model for learning and developing emotional intelligence skills at cognitive, experiential, behavioral, and in-depth levels. The positive assessment and emotional learning system have important applications for helping people develop healthy behaviors in a variety of settings.
