Maria finds herself all alone on an annual sojourn to new York.
She swaps homes with her friend who visits her home in the Luberon, South of France, while Maria stays at her apartment in Manhattan.
She is lonely. She is 69 years old, but she looks ten years younger, if only she was not suffering from aches and pains, as people do at a certain age. She is attractive, with long white hair wore as a pony-tail and eyes that people cannot stop looking into.
For days she visits cafes where she listens to people’s stories from nearby tables, becoming engrossed in their tales.
Then she attends a book signing at a nearby bookstore and the author invites her for coffee and afterwards walks her back to the apartment. Their meeting should have ended there, but Maria becomes somewhat infatuated with him and begins a fantasy relationship with him. Her imaginary friend.
From a poster in the bookstore window she paints a portrait of the author she met only once.
