Earlier this year, the last of America's World War I veterans passed on. It proved to be a monumental event that the press and media hardly took notice of it. We are now n the second decade of the 21st Century and America's World War II veterans are dying at an alarming rate. These are men and women who stepped forward in the defense of their country by the millions.


My own daddy, Johnnie Dixon Cobb, was one of these brave soldiers who answered the call to duty eight months before Pearl Harbor. He said farewell to his family in North Carolina and was sent to one of the most desolate places on the face of this planet.


The Aleutians are rugged volcanic islands that-suddenly rise out of the Bering Sea and run westward from the Alaskan mainland to the International Date Line. In the unending darkness of the long Aleutian winters, the temperature often drops into the mid-60's below zero.
