He meets Lorna by accident and falls in love with her right away. It turns out that Lorna is the granddaughter of Sir Ensor Doone, the lord of the Doones. She is also going to marry Carver Doone, the reckless, dangerous, and now jealous heir to the Doone Valley, even though she doesn't want to. Nothing will stop Carver from marrying Lorna. He plans to force her to do it as soon as Sir Ensor dies and gives him his money. But John doesn't agree.
