Few of Richard Matheson’s readers know he had hopes for writing popular songs. At an early age, Matheson taught himself to write sheet music. But his family couldn’t afford art supplies and he had to give up composition. Music never left his mind, though, and when Matheson found a new creative outlet through his writing (cheaper than music, requiring only a pencil and maybe paper), he quickly began composing both prose stories and poetry. He picked up music composition again at the age of 17, adding music to his poems. Lyrics holds the poems created from the music of Matheson’s life. This is a first time publication.
