Madam Voss, Undertaker

Madam Voss knows that the dead rarely leave quietly.

As an undertaker, she has learned to read more than faces. A missing ring. A bruise beneath a collar. A letter tucked inside a coffin lining. A body that seems perfectly respectable until someone looks a little closer.

Most people come to Madam Voss to bury their dead.

Some come because they are afraid of what the dead might reveal.
When a prominent gentleman arrives at her funeral parlor with a death that seems too convenient, Madam Voss notices details the authorities dismiss as insignificant. The grieving family wants a respectable burial, the local officials want the matter forgotten, and the town's most influential citizens have excellent reasons for keeping their mouths shut.
But Madam Voss has never been particularly good at leaving secrets underground.

Her investigation takes her through drawing rooms, back alleys, family estates, apothecaries, churchyards, and the shadowy world surrounding the city's dead. Along the way, she uncovers old grudges, concealed relationships, questionable inheritances, and a secret someone is willing to kill to keep buried.

Unfortunately for them, Madam Voss has access to the one place where everybody eventually tells the truth.

The undertaker's table.

Madam Voss, Undertaker is a darkly witty historical mystery about death, deception, buried scandals, and a formidable woman who discovers that sometimes the best evidence is found six feet under.
