A young woman's murder shatters an Oregon community preparing to celebrate the nation's bicentennial in this literary mystery from an award-winning author.

As an army veteran, rancher, and lawman, Sheriff Ty Dawson understands the responsibilities taken and sacrifices made to protect and defend a way of life. Oregon's Meriwether County is more than his jurisdiction; it is his home—a proud community where people are unafraid to tackle the hard work required to make a living and raise a family. But even those united by character and tradition aren't immune from the malaise affecting a country still reeling from the fallout of the Vietnam War's end and the Watergate scandal.

Now, in the summer of 1976, a murder has the county on edge. The body of an unidentified girl was found near train tracks by Shiloh Lake, and the investigation is rattling the region's business and political interests. Railroad executives are demanding their transport lines reopen. The mayor fears the bad press will taint the county's planned bicentennial celebrations, ruining their chance to play host to the Freedom Train and its historical artifacts during its cross-country tour.

All Dawson wants to do is bring a killer to justice, only to confront uncooperative witnesses and competitive law enforcement agencies whose agendas and secrets reveal even more heinous crimes and darker truths about life in Meriwether County.
