The Pearl

First published in 1947 and based on a Mexican folktale Steinbeck heard while traveling in Baja California, The Pearl is one of his most widely read and gripping novellas. The story follows Kino, a poor, hardworking pearl diver who lives a simple, peaceful life in a brush house by the sea with his wife, Juana, and their infant son, Coyotito. When a scorpion stings their baby and the prejudiced town doctor refuses to treat him without payment, Kino takes his canoe out in desperate search of a pearl to pay for the cure.

Miraculously, Kino discovers the "Pearl of the World"—a massive, flawless, incredibly valuable gem that promises to save his son and transform his family’s future. However, the magnificent discovery quickly poisons the town with jealousy, greed, and violence. As Kino fiercely clings to the pearl and the dreams it represents, he is drawn into a dark, desperate struggle for survival. Steinbeck’s prose is beautiful and haunting, creating a powerful fable about human nature and the heavy price of ambition.
