APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Across the Nightingale Floor is steeped in enough history to feel real, and and enough fantasy to feel truly magical. In a land inspired by feudal Japan, 15-year-old Takeo’s parents are killed when their village is burned by a warlord. Adopted by royalty and embroiled in politics and war, he falls in love with Kaede, the daughter of another powerful family, and learns he is part of a secret order of spies and assassins. Narrators Kevin Gray and Aiko Nakasone give Taeko and Kaede's alternating chapters a feeling of honesty—even as the intrigue deepens and the stakes grow higher. We loved diving into the political machinations of this fascinating world, but were just as captivated by Takeo's discovery of who he is and what he stands for. This first heart-pounding adventure in Lian Hearn's Tales of the Otori series utterly transported us to Takeo and Kaede's world—and we can't wait to return.
