APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
In Flock: First Nations Stories Then and Now, award-winning writer Ellen van Neerven has gathered twenty stunning short stories, published over a 25-year period spanning this century and the last. The assembled First Nations writers include established and emerging talents, all displaying remarkable flair for the craft. The pieces in this collection are superb—each a storytelling masterclass and utterly unique. As van Neerven writes in the introduction: “Some are touching, some gritty, some funny, many are all three.” We were particularly moved by Archie Weller’s ‘Shadows on the Wall’, a prison-cell drama about family and small comforts with a gut punch of a twist; the poignant ‘River Story’ by Mykaela Saunders with its wrenching birth and death scenes; and Melissa Lucashenko’s ‘Dreamers’, with its staggering opening line, “Gimme an axe”. We can’t overstate how much we enjoyed this book. It’s a must-read for lovers of Australian stories.
