Publisher Description

Crimson Lake is where bad people come to disappear - and where eight-year-old boys vanish into thin air . . .

On the fifth floor of the White Caps Hotel, four young friends are left alone while their parents dine downstairs. But when Sara Farrow checks on the children at midnight, her son is missing. The boys swear they stayed in their room, and CCTV confirms Richie has not left the building. Despite a thorough search, no trace of the child is found.

Distrustful of the police, Sara turns to Crimson Lake's unlikeliest private investigators: disgraced cop Ted Conkaffey and convicted killer Amanda Pharrell. This case just the sort of twisted puzzle that gets Amanda's blood pumping.

For Ted, the case couldn't have come at a worse time. Two years ago a false accusation robbed him of his career, his reputation and most importantly his family. But now Lillian, the daughter he barely knows, is coming to stay in his ramshackle cottage by the lake.

Ted must dredge up the area's worst characters to find a missing boy. And the kind of danger he uncovers could well put his own child in deadly peril . . .

Crimson and clover

2.5 stars

Australian author from Sydney's western suburbs. Grew up listening to tales from her parole officer Dad, and started writing crime and gothic fiction as a rebellious teen. Won a Ned Kelly award for each of her first two books, and partnered up with James Patterson for a while. This is the third in a series about a NSW detective wrongly accused of being a creepy pedo child killer, who flees to Far NQ to hide out from the press, yada, yada, and starts solving crimes with a multiply tattooed and pierced female ex-con convicted murder, as you do.

Our boy Ted's soon to be ex-missus has agreed to let his 3 year old daughter stay with her Dad for a few days, but wouldn't you know it, a kid disappears from a hotel on Cairns while on holiday with his single parent Mum. Ted gets dragged in as a suspect initially, then to help with the investigation. His female offsider pisses everyone off as usual, but produces a little Sherlock magic too. Stuff happens. Resolution occurs after various improbable plot twists.

The series is not ageing well IMHO, and the narrator on the audio version is awful, but what would I know? This has a 4.16 average on Goodreads.

I enjoyed the ongoing saga of Ted and Amanda and their lives In crimson lake including wrong doings. A special shout out to the narrator who’s voice is so soothing to listen to
