The author is an Australian lawyer. This is her first novel.
Feisty female family court judge found strangled to death in chambers the morning after she’s elevated to chief judge. Female police detective back from maternity leave after discovering she’s not cut out to be a mother investigates, and competes with her hot looking male replacement now offsider. Themes include settlements in family law, domestic violence (of course), and the motherhood issue noted above. Many of the male characters, the older ones especially, are stereotypical MCPs. The ones who are not are presumed to be until proven otherwise.
The prose is well paced, although it felt a little stiff at times. (That’s judges for you) The plot twists are not telegraphed, and I found the denouement satisfactory. This is essentially a bog standard police procedural, not a legal thriller as advertised, but a sound debut nonetheless. The audio version was well done.
