If you love midcentury aesthetics—but can do without the misogyny—Elizabeth Zott is the heroine for you. The 1960s chemist is unapologetic and brilliant, but sexism in her field makes it near impossible to advance. What a surprise, then, that an offer to host a cooking show turns out to be just the opportunity Elizabeth’s been waiting for. We love Bonnie Garmus’ precise, honest, no-nonsense protagonist, a single mother who initially agrees to her new gig solely to provide for her smart 10-year-old daughter, Madeline. Elizabeth approaches her job at Supper at Six in her unique way, hosting in a lab coat, giving proper chemical names for ingredients, and encouraging her viewers to take their dreams, abilities and intelligence 100 percent seriously. Miranda Raison’s cool and matter-of-fact narration perfectly captures Elizabeth’s steely charm, as well as debut novelist Garmus’ sly humour. This book was Amazing, it made me think of all the sexist things my mum went through in the 60s it is terrible I am very grateful for all the privileges I have. I would defiantly recommend this I love the idea of overcoming a terrible thing and using it to come good
Zott’s Way
Elizabeth Zott is a modern day David Copperfield, determined to be the hero of her own life on her own terms. Women’s workplace conditions and politics still aren’t great in 2022, in the 50’s and 60’s things were far more rigid, and institutional misogyny was very much alive. How Elizabeth Zott delivers life lessons for her daughter (and the afternoon TV watching homemakers) while aspiring to solve the riddles of the origins of life will have you laughing, crying, angry and celebrating. A truly inspiring story!
