#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “This will be one of your favorite books of all time. Through her intensely vulnerable, honest, and hilarious reflections, Chelsea shows us more than just her insides. She shows us ourselves.”—Amy Schumer
Don’t miss Chelsea Handler’s new Netflix stand-up special, Revolution, now streaming!
In the wake of President Donald Trump’s election, feeling that her country—her life—has become unrecognizable, Chelsea Handler has an awakening. Fed up with the privileged bubble she’s lived in, she decides it’s time to make some changes.
She embarks on a year of self-sufficiency and goes into therapy, prepared to do the heavy lifting required to make sense of a childhood that ended abruptly with the death of her brother. She meets her match in an earnest, nerdy shrink who dissects her anger and gets her to confront her fear of intimacy. Out in the world, she channels her outrage into social action and finds her voice as an advocate for change. With the love and support of an eccentric cast of friends, assistants, family members (alive and dead), and a pair of emotionally withholding rescue dogs, Chelsea digs deep into the trauma that shaped her inimitable worldview and unearths some glittering truths that light up the road ahead.
Thrillingly honest and insightful, Chelsea Handler’s darkly comic memoir is also a clever and sly work of inspiration that gets us to ask ourselves what really matters in our own lives.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Chelsea Handler’s bold, irreverent honesty always slays us, but Life Will Be the Death of Me brings her candour to inspiring new heights. Hilarious and deeply personal, Handler’s memoir recounts how, at the pinnacle of her success, the comedian made an unexpected choice: to spend time trying to become a better person. She reads the audiobook herself, punctuating frank stories about everything from therapy to experiments with ayahuasca with her impeccable timing; she also bravely addresses childhood traumas, including her older brother’s tragic death. Through it all, Handler is fiercely witty, but for the first time, she’s something else, too: vulnerable.
Customer Reviews
Handler delves deeper and we get to join her on her journey.
I admire Chelsea Handler for a lot of reasons. The main one was watching her show ‘’chelsea’ and observing as she became more and more frustrated in the outside world.
She could have continued with her comedic books, tours, shows but instead decided to search inside instead of blaming the world.
This audiobook is a delight and enjoyable and is in my top 10 female autobiographies of inspiring women. Chelsea manages to take a hard look at herself, be vulnerable, and share the knowledge she has gained through seeking help whilst bringing the laughter and tears simultaneously.
The real beauty of listening to this as an audiobook is we hear Chelsea’s voice. The voice that so often is linked to antagonising and inappropriate behaviour has grown up. Chelsea evolves in this story about her life and her experience with therapy.
This book didn’t inspire me, mainly because I strongly believe that going to seek help with counselling, psychology, whatever is not weakness but is a necessity these days to survive the lifestyle that our world has come to expect of us. Asking for help is not weak and Chelsea proves that here.
This could have been yet another comedy book, or a self help book, but it wasn’t. It was a woman who is searching for how to make her life better and in doing so make others lives better. Chelsea manages to make you laugh and cry in a single chapter. This book wasn’t written to make money, this book feels like it was a way for Chelsea to express her pain, share her pain and be okay doing that.
I find CH an inspiration, but especially after listening to this.
So why should you order the audiobook instead of just reading? These are Chelsea’s thoughts and experiences and who better to talk about them than the woman herself? The most moving parts of this story was how genuinely emotional she was when reading it. Her voice cracks, you can hear the tears and on the other side of things, the laughter. Buy by the book, but I recommend the audiobook, because you can hear her pain, her realisations, her hope for the future, which may not be conveyed as well in the written form compared to Chelsea talking about it herself.
I look forward to your next book, show, endeavour.
Broke my heart, made me laugh, then showed me how to pick up the pieces
So much of this resonated with me. And hearing Chelsea tell her story was ...awesome. Have loved her for years now but this book is actually quite beautifully written and just felt like a privilege to hear in some parts, to be honest. One big ORANGE. Thank you Chelsea Handler 👏🏽🍊
Emotional, powerful, and honest.
Three words that sum up the illustrious career of Chelsea Handler. However, this book seems different.
The emotion is funny, sombre, and well throughout.
She illustrates her understanding of the power that her words hold.
And her honesty, while still brash, has been refined.
This book was wildly entertaining and has impacted my life. Highly recommend.
