Why so much compression?

This is a wonderful book, and, I hear, a wonderful radio adaptation. But looking at the file size of 109MB for well over three hours of audio, I don't need to hear this download directly to know it's going to be compressed to buggery and sound like rubbish. The physical CD version won't. Why does iTunes charge commercial rates for audiobook content that is massively inferior to physical copies of the same thing?
