Berlin 1943. August Schlegel lives in a world full of questions with no easy answers. Why is he being called out on a homicide case when he works in financial crimes? Why did the old Jewish soldier with an Iron Cross shoot the block warden in the eye then put a bullet through his own head? Why does Schlegel persist with the case when no one cares because the Jews are all being shipped out anyway? And why should Eiko Morgen, wearing the dreaded black uniform of the SS, turn up and say he has been assigned to work with him?
Corpses, dressed with fake money, bodies flayed beyond recognition: are these routine murders committed out of rage or is someone trying to tell them something ...
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
The title of this 1943-set procedural thriller lays it all out—there’s no shortage of violence and inhumanity here. In Germany’s capital during the height of the Holocaust, detective August Schlegel, who usually works white-collar crimes, is thrust into a highly charged situation when he is tasked with solving a series of grisly murders involving Jews. The mood of harrowing dread is underscored by the clipped tones of narrator Allan Corduner, whose mother escaped Nazi Germany. Chris Petit put mountains of research into creating this very dark story, which pulls you right into this city on the brink of collapse.

Great writing and narration
I really enjoyed this book - it had an intricate and detailed plot, and it felt very well researched. It gives an interesting and harrowing insight into what life was like for everyday German citizens during WWII.
The narrator did a fantastic job at bringing the story to life and making it easy to differentiate each of the characters.
I’m definitely going to listen to the next book in the series
