Publisher Description
Author of the New York Times best seller The Beginning of Infinity, David Deutsch, explores the four most fundamental strands of human knowledge: quantum physics, and the theories of knowledge, computation, and evolution - and their unexpected connections. Taken together, these four strands reveal a deeply integrated, rational, and optimistic worldview. It describes a unified fabric of reality that is objective and comprehensible, in which human action and thought are central.
With new preface exclusive to the audiobook, read by the author.

Optimism and Infinity
Attempts at so-called Theories of Everything tend to vanity. But Deutsch is both brave and humble, providing food-for-thought in his speculations about computation and many-worlds, whilst speaking in-depth about the philosophical problems in epistemology and how this should factor into how we do science. The emphasis on the issues with inductivism are the most far-reaching and profound part of the book and it is really good to see a scientist give attention to these dilemmas. Also, he reminds us that a theory of everything will not be a matter of reducing the world to particle physics, like in the TOEs and GUTs of that field—it is important to understand that the world is far too rich and more complex to bound within theory. Lastly, the optimism emanates from this book, a theme which he explicitly defines. This attitude is invaluable and we as humans will need it survive.
