Publisher Description

This brand-new unabridged audio book of The Fellowship of the Ring, the first part of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic adventure, The Lord of the Rings, is read by the BAFTA award-winning actor, director and author, Andy Serkis.

In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power – the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion.

Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

A master rendition of a masterpiece

Having read The Lord of the Rings many times, I had always had difficulty listening to audiobook versions. In the past, I had not been able to listen to the entire trilogy. There is, undoubtedly, a lot of personal preference involved, but as a narrator, Andy Serkis has an excellent and pleasant storytelling voice.

Each of the characters are immediately recognisable throughout the story by the distinct voices he gives them. I can hear that he has aided his interpretations of the character voices by impersonating fellow actors from the films, but something that I particularly enjoy is the consistency in accents between different kingdoms and groups. I am often put off by the way female characters are voiced but Andy’s approach was subtle enough to not seem comical.

The dynamics of the story are well communicated and Tolkien’s exquisite writing is elevated by a passionate, committed performance.

If I had one bone to pick, it would be the songs. As a musician (specifically traditional folk), I do find some of the melodies to be a bit cheesy. I am aware that this is difficult to pull off, so I will not let it affect my rating. I often find myself skipping through many of the songs on rereads anyway! He does his best to create distinguishable melodies and maintains the character’s voice throughout.

I am on my second listening and, all in all, I am very satisfied and will be happy to listen again and again!
