In The Land Before Avocado, broadcaster and writer Richard Glover transports listeners back to the Australia of the 1960s and ‘70s. His narration is jovial and engaging, sharing funny anecdotes from a time when a can of pineapple could improve any meal and instant coffee was the go-to brew. But he also records many of the more serious failings of the period—no-fault divorce didn’t exist yet, First Nations people faced blatant discrimination and the country’s immigration laws were known as the White Australia Policy. Glover’s research is compellingly presented as he makes the case that the broad nostalgia for these years is unwarranted—and further societal change is possible.
