Publisher Description

Brought to you by Penguin.

The edge-of-your-seat, heart-in-mouth new Jack Reacher thriller for 2020 - his 25th adventure. No one's bigger than Jack Reacher.

Jack Reacher gets off the bus in a sleepy no-name town outside Nashville, Tennessee. He plans to grab a cup of coffee and move right along.

Not going to happen.

The town has been shut down by a cyber attack. At the centre of it all, whether
he likes it or not, is Rusty Rutherford. He's an average IT guy, but he knows more than he thinks.

As the bad guys move in on Rusty, Reacher moves in on them . . .

And now Rusty knows he's protected, he's never going to leave the big man's side.

Reacher might just have to stick around and find out what the hell's gone wrong . . . and then put it right, like only he can.

Jack of all trades

3.5 stars

Author
British. Lee Child is the pen name of Jim Grant, who has made his name, and fortune, with a series about former US Army MP turned free lance vigilante, who roams the US (almost exclusively Red State deplorable areas) at random righting wrongs, busting heads (and other things), then moving on. Age does not appear to weary Reacher, but it has Mr Child. His younger (early fifties) brother Andrew Grant, who has published a number of thrillers in his own name, comes on board this time as co-author and will take over the franchise from here on. As a gesture of good faith, young Andy has taken on the Child nom de plume. Lee Child is only 66 so I can't imagine he'll stop writing altogether. His stint on the judging committee for the Booker Prize this year might have persuaded him to turn his hand to literary fiction. Let's hope not. His mastery of short, punchy sentences (both literarily and metaphorically) is unlikely to stand him in good stead.
Plot
Jack lobs into Nashville, does some damage, then hitches a ride to a nearby small town where he wreaks a whole lot more after coming to the aid of a computer nerd about to be kidnapped by bad guys. There's gruesome murders, Homeland Security, the FBI, dodgy small town coppers except for one chick who is honest, Internet hacking to influence elections, ransomware, neo- Nazis, Russian spies, underground torture chambers, you name it. The end.
Narrative
Third person from Jack's POV, as usual.
Characterisation
I'd characterise this as a Jack Reacher novel. Pace is king.
Prose
Did I mention Mr Child is a maestro of the short sentence? Apart from that, there's a lot of bang, wham, oof, zap, kapow etc.
Bottom line
Utterly ridiculous plot you'll forget within hours, but quick to read and entertaining as ever.
