A new kind of prequel
This introduction into Dave's life is a lovely way to let readers Understand just part of Dave's attitude towards justice and empathy. However you should probably read this just before Fool's Gold as that book seems to be where you learn of Dave's first wife Melinda 3 weeks after their marriage and before the Red Dust investigation.
