Dozens of tree swallows were swooping low over the shallow-water impoundment at the Whitehurst Tract near Back Bay. It was frigid, yet these swallows knew the impoundment's low water would warm up enough in the sun to attract insects on which to feed. The iridescent greenish-blue birds flew back and forth, drinking water and snagging dinner.
