But when the local police discover a dead body—who turns out to be another former British agent—Lane is sucked right back into her dangerous line of work. Author Iona Whishaw has a clever eye for both historical detail and on-point twists. But her characters, especially the tough but wounded Lane and the well-mannered, charming Inspector Darling, are the best thing about the story. This endearing period whodunit will delight fans of Maisie Dobbs and Inspector Gamache.
