Publisher Description
The second instalment of the highly praised Toby Daye series.
October ‘Toby’ Daye is a changeling, daughter of a fae and a mortal man. Like her mother, she able to read what has happened to a person through a mere taste of their blood. Toby is the only changeling who has earned knighthood, and she earns that position every day, undertaking assignments for her liege, Sylvester, the Duke of the Shadowed Hills.
Now Sylvester has asked her to go to the County of Tamed Lightning – otherwise known as Fremont, California – to check up on his niece, Countess January O'Leary. A baby-sitting assignment – or so it would seem; but Toby soon discovers that someone has begun murdering people close to January: if Toby can't find the killer, she may well become the next victim.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
McGuire follows 2009 s Rosemary and Rue with a fast-paced cross between a murder mystery and a slasher film, liberally spiked with magic and technology. Half-faerie PI October Toby Daye leaves San Francisco for the nearby County of Tamed Lightning to check up on her patron s niece, January, who s uncharacteristically fallen out of contact. Toby soon realizes that ALH Computing, the county s secret seat of power, has big problems. Someone doesn t want outsiders snooping around, and as the body count rises, Toby will risk life, limb, and soul to find out what s really going on. While most of the deaths could have been prevented with a little less plot-mandated stupidity, the world-building is solid, the storytelling energetic, and the atmosphere sinister as mythological creatures face off against mad scientists.

Must read!
Book two cemented the work of book one - capturing me forever more. Detailed and loveable characters, character development, and accurate application of Fae history and world
A thriller fantasy!
Having read the 1st book into the 2nd it was more than wonderful seeing how McGuire managed to create an even more vivid and enthralling piece of writing than the last installment.
It was wonderful seeing some themes of morality and even love tying in very seamlessly to the first installment, but also so incredibly refreshing to be in a new and dangerous setting.
One again I couldn’t put this novel down and recommend reading this as it’ll put you on the edge of your seat ( or even cowering a little bit from McGuire’s vivid storytelling abilities).
