A Long Way Back is a four part family saga set in the West Country of England in the years spanning the turn of the nineteenth century. It tells of three interconnected young women and their struggles to overcome adversity while trying to make sense of dark secrets from the distant past.
The first book starts in the summer of 1796. In Devonshire, fourteen-year-old Sarah lives on the large farm, which has been home to countless generations of her late mother's family.
Sarah’s father is a strict head of his household and workforce. Throughout her childhood, she has quietly accepted his rule that no one is ever allowed to mention her mother. But when she learns he intends to send her away to a boarding school for young ladies, she becomes determined to defy him in every way she can.
