A Portrait of Old George Town

Although the title of this book may lead you to think that this book contains the entire history of George Town, from its beginnings, it does not. It wasn’t the authors idea to write its history, since there have been written several. His intention was to paint a portrait of this old town where he, his parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and one great-great-grandfather lived.

In this portrait, he presents town’s physical features, such as streets, houses, gardens, and other buildings.

Apart from telling about the physical side of the old George Town, the author tells about the people that lived there, their character and way of living, from the beginning up to the nineties. He tells about what they worked, played, the things they did, their thoughts and beliefs.

So, this book doesn’t tell about the history of George Town, but he takes around 150 years from the past of this town and brings them in the present. Through his description of the town and its features and the citizens, the author allows his readers to see the town in its past and see the life there.
