This is a story about Marvellous Ways, an eighty-nine-year-old woman who lives alone in a remote Cornish creek, spending her days sitting by the river, peering through a telescope. And it's about Francis Drake, a young soldier who washes up in her creek, shattered by war and broken-hearted. It's about the magic in everyday life and the lure of the sea, the healing powers of storytelling and sloe gin, love and death, and how we carry on when grief comes snapping at our heels.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
On the heels of her lovely debut, When God Was a Rabbit, Sarah Winman brings us an enchanting story about the unlikely friendship between an 89-year-old recluse and a young soldier reeling from the impact of World War II. Marvellous Ways has led a solitary life in a small Cornish fishing village; as she withdraws into her memories, we’re treated to gorgeously written scenes of passion and loss. But when Marvellous connects with a stranger named Freddy, she confirms her hunch that the world isn’t done with her yet. Winman’s writing is stunning and poetic—we loved every moment we spent with her extraordinary characters.

A year of Marvellous ways
I loved “Still Life” so much, so went in search of another of Sarah’s books. I didn’t think it possible to love this book more, but I did! I am feeling so sad to have finished this beautifully written story. Thank you Sarah for introducing us to Marvellous 🙏🏼

I thought 'When God Was A Rabbit was good until I read this book. I got it on Thursday and could not put it down. The writing is, well, glorious. The story intriguing. I loved everything about it. You just seemed to dive into and be engrossed with all the people. Thank you for this lovely book. I don't write reviews very often and have read an awful lot of books in my life and this one is there with the best and in years to come I will read it again.
