Publisher Description
Welcome to the sugar-fueled, manically creative cake universe of Christina Tosi.
It’s a universe of ooey-gooey banana-chocolate-peanut butter cakes you make in a crockpot, of layer cakes that taste like Key lime pie, and the most baller birthday cake ever.
From her home kitchen to the creations of her beloved Milk Bar, All About Cake covers everything: two-minute microwave mug cakes, buttery Bundts and pounds, her famous cake truffles and, of course, her signature naked layer cakes filled with pops of flavors and textures.
But more than just a collection of Christina’s greatest-hits recipes (c’mon, like that’s not enough?) this book will be your guide for how to dream up and make cakes of any flavor you can think of, whether you’re a kitchen rookie or a full-fledged baking hardbody.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Tosi, chef and owner of Milk Bar bakeries, showcases her bubbly personality and an enjoyable collection of cake recipes in her lovely third cookbook. Her anecdotes, like confessing to disliking cake as a child ("To me, cake was really a vehicle for a frosting fest"), are as fun as her sweet and savory flavor combinations, such as compost pound cake made with chocolate chips and potato chips, banana green curry pound cake, and popcorn layer cake with a salted caramel filling. However, there are some flavor combinations that slightly miss the mark, such as a celery root pound cake with pickled celery and a pancake layer cake with miso curd and black pepper butter. Fortunately, there are plenty more delicious recipes, including several from Milk Bar, such as double-layer birthday cake, strawberry-lemon cake truffles, and dulce de leche layer cake. Other recipes, most notably the cherry cola bundt cake, oatmeal-apple-brown sugar microwave mug cake, and creamsicle Crock-Pot cake, are inspired by her childhood. Tosi writes for beginners looking to make simple bundts and experienced bakers who could take on wedding cakes alike. Anyone who bakes regularly and is eager to try something new will want to take a look.
Customer Reviews
It takes the cake… to places I’ve never been
It’s written in a polarising yet entertaining style. The recipes are well explained and appear somewhat harder than they actually are.
I tried the cherry cola cake first up and it was moist, beautiful crumb and delicious. Its existence on this planet was brief but stellar. There was a slight issue in that I couldn’t readily identify either a prominent cherry flavour nor a cola one. If that sort of thing stops you enjoying a cake that someone who knows their craft has helped you create then perhaps you ought to go elsewhere.
I may return to this review once I’ve made a few more recipes out of here but I will, and that should tell you what you wanted to know.
