For the British people, the early summer of 1940 was one of great anxiety, suddenly lightened by the ‘Miracle of Dunkirk’; for the French people, the same anxiety was followed by bitter defeat and humiliation. Whilst in Britain the remnants of her army were being welcomed home, fed, organised, and newly equipped as far as was possible, In France the remnants of her army were being savagely beaten, as the German forces scythed their way south into the body of France.
