Publisher Description
Set at the outbreak of World War I, this classic German novel follows a generation of young soldiers from the classroom to the trenches.
In 1914, a room full of German schoolboys, fresh-faced and idealistic, are goaded by their schoolmaster to troop off to the 'glorious war'.
With the fire and patriotism of youth they sign up. One by one the boys begin to fall...
All Quiet on the Western Front depicts artillery bombardment, battlefield survival and the psychological trauma of industrialised war, and remains one of the most influential works of twentieth century war literature.
'A necessary, shattering read' Irish Times

Infantry men
Compelled to read this after reading "Somme Mud" an Australian infantry mans account of the same time, I found it to be a wonderful and awful read at the sometime. A great novel that makes you cry and ask "why" to any war.
For both the German and the Australian the trench war experience was the same, except one called the other "Tommy" and the other "Fritz".
As to the critic or academic, why can't this novel be enjoyed for what it is without being dissected and analyzed. Leave it to the individual to ponder, a flower is no longer beautiful when pulled apart for further inquiry. If I had of been forced to read this at school it's beauty would have been lost on me then, and my young mind could not have comprehended the innocence of a husband yearning to have his wife in full view of his comrades, and the 'pretty' face of the after woods. I am glad I discovered this on my own and will probably re read it.
