Even in 2021, it can be difficult being a gay teen in a place like regional Victoria—especially when you feel like you’re the only one. When a terrible accident derails Luca’s dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer, he’s forced into a new school, away from his BFFs and the safe, tolerant environment he knew. Still, he’s made a kind, brilliant (if socially awkward) friend, and there’s that cute (but probably straight) boy from occupational therapy. Set in Ballarat, Tobias Madden’s debut novel is a wonderfully warm and fuzzy YA, and while it’s overflowing with heart, it doesn’t shy away from confronting issues such as homophobia and religious discrimination head-on. Telling the story from Luca’s perspective, Madden perfectly channels the teen’s voice in all its anxious, hilarious and sexually-excited glory. Anything But Fine is a genuine read-in-one-sitting delight.

I love this book! It was super comforting and relatable as a person who is in the Australian ballet, and the plot was insane and chaotic.
