From the author: “There’s a mother and daughter at the heart of this book and I love writing about mothers and daughters. I’ve got two daughters and obviously I’m a daughter. It’s a complicated relationship. I wanted there to be a bit of a road trip as well. I thought, ‘Why would this mother and daughter be on a road trip? What is the most dramatic thing they could be looking for?’ And I thought it would be quite good if they were going to meet the daughter’s father. I wrote the whole thing in lockdown when we couldn’t go anywhere, so writing about travelling was appealing. This is set in Scarborough, Cambridge, New York and Edinburgh. And usually I’d have gone to those places to get a feel for the streets or pick out some detail. But obviously I couldn’t do that—it was all done on Street View! But it was really lovely to escape into these characters’ lives and have them setting off on journeys. I went through so many variations of the story before I hit upon this one. A big theme is chance encounters and split-second moments where life can change. I’m kind of fascinated by those things. And it was especially interesting to think about that in lockdown, where life wasn’t changing much at all. It’s about the path not taken and then what happens if you go back and try again. We all have ‘what ifs’, don’t we?”
