An epic novel set against the backdrop of the 1980s space shuttle program about the extraordinary lengths we go to live and love beyond our limits.
In the summer of 1980, astrophysics professor Joan Goodwin begins training to be an astronaut at Houston’s Johnson Space Center, alongside an exceptional group of fellow candidates: Top Gun pilot Hank Redmond; mission specialists John Griffin and Lydia Danes; warmhearted Donna Fitzgerald; and Vanessa Ford, the magnetic and mysterious aeronautical engineer. As the new astronauts prepare for their first flights, Joan finds a passion and a love she never imagined and begins to question everything she believes about her place in the observable universe.
Then, in December of 1984, on mission STS-LR9, everything changes in an instant.
Atmosphere is Taylor Jenkins Reid at her best: transporting readers to iconic times and places, creating complex protagonists, and telling a passionate and soaring story about the transformative power of love – this time among the stars.

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Strong female characters and deep historical dives are two of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s greatest fortes as a writer, and here, they’re both on clear display. Astrophysics professor Joan Goodwin’s journey from academia to astronaut is awash with period detail from the early 1980s, as she enters a strange new world filled with interesting people and chases both romantic love and a fresh appreciation of her place in the universe. Reid’s own passion for the subject matter shines through, and you may find yourself tempted to purchase a telescope—or at least spend a bit more time gazing up at the night sky.
Customer Reviews
Another absolute winner from TJR
Loved this book, as I have loved all her books, but this one is the only one that brought me to tears. Such an easy read but still so touching and inspiring. Highly recommend.
Brilliant
Beautifully written! The characters became real and the love story divine, loved every page.
Her best yet
This is by far my favourite of all of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s books. I didn’t think I’d find better than Evelyn Hugo or perhaps Daisy Jones, but this one is different.
The way she can so carefully capture a certain time with detail and accuracy and a weave it into a story as if it becomes one of the characters is breathtaking.
This book tells the story of space travel, star gazing, NASA and the inclusion of women in the space shuttle program, complicated family dynamics and great, once in a lifetime love.
My only problem now is what I will do with myself now that it’s over. This is a story that will stay with me. Thank you
