Interesting story, of a girl Lucy who dies to re-awaken as a Patronis - a guardian of souls between when they leave their Earthly bodies and get their final destination decided. She is intensely drawn to Max, another Patronis, then she is tortured by a vampire after only having one day of training, then her 11 year old sister is about to die of leukemia, so she trains full-out to try to be ready in time to be able to Guide her sister once she dies. It turns out she is a star and has amazing abilities, but a spy in their midst causes a trap, and her sister is captured by the vampires. The connection and flashbacks she's been having around Max are because she is half of the original couple (Adam and Eve) and her soul has been searching for her other half.
I was suspicious of this turn in the story but went ahead and bought the second book. Big mistake!
