Publisher Description

Baptists received inspiration to establish settlement houses from the Settlement Movement in social work. In 1873, Samuel and Henrietta Barnett founded Toynbee Hall, the first settlement house, in London. (1) The purpose of Toynbee Hall was "to provide education and the means of recreation and employment for people of the poorer districts of London and other great cities, to enquire into the conditions of the poor and to consider and advance plans calculated to promote their welfare; to acquire by purchase or otherwise and to maintain a house or houses for the residence of persons engaged in or connected with philanthropic or education work."
