Piper is beginning her freshman year at high school in West Virginia, feeling like she's always been on the outside looking in. She's never thought of herself as pretty or smart, and fitting in has always been a struggle.

That all changes when she befriends a group of kids who wear black and embrace the unconventional. Through their friendship, Piper starts to explore new aspects of herself--her politics, her religion, and even her gender identity.

But as she delves deeper into their world, Piper begins to wonder if she's truly discovering her own identity or merely adopting the one her friends expect of her. Torn between the desire to belong and the need to stay true to herself, Piper faces tough questions about friendship, identity, and what it means to be transgender.
