Publisher Description
Andy Matheson, a young man who grows disillusioned with his fundamentalist Pentecostal upbringing, is recruited for a summer internship selling educational books door-to-door. While on the book-field in Talladega County, AL Matheson finds himself in a cult-like subculture of conjured convictions and conditioned positivity that is similar to the extremism of his childhood religious experiences. Aware of his own recalcitrance he internalizes the guilt of his need to question, his failure to live up to the expectation that he follow in the footsteps of his older siblings and his undefined feelings for Anna, a young woman whose is confused over her own sexuality.
When he isn't being chased by pit bulls or conversing with hillbillies about educational products he finds himself contemplating his roots and trying to find a sense of proportion. Just when Matheson begins to feel at ease life intervenes and he is once again forced to try to understand the nature of belief.
